Boards/ESP32-C3 OLED

Two of the sixteen pins are already spoken for, and one of them is the screen.

A C3 with a display soldered to it is not a C3 with a display wired to it: the bus, the pins and two of the GPIOs were decided at the factory. Here is that board's first hour, in order.

The board this book is about
ChipESP32-C3FH4 · single-core RISC-V, up to 160 MHz
Memory4 MB, inside the module · 400 kB SRAM · no PSRAM
Screen0.42 in, 72 × 40, SH1106 at 0x3C, on GPIO 5 and 6
Blue LEDGPIO 8, printed on the board as IO8
Size25 × 20.5 mm, header rows 17.78 mm (700 mil) apart

Everything here is written for this board. For a page that is true of every ESP32 rather than of one of them, the ESP32 book is next door.

What the chip is, which of the sixteen holes are already answering to something, and which way round the board seats on its expansion base.

No driver, one port, and one menu row that decides whether the board can talk back. Then the button sequence for the day it will not.

The screen

It is already wired, it is already on the bus, and it is 72 pixels wide. Two sketches: one that proves it is there, one that writes on it.

Off the bench

A battery you can read the level of, and a radio that has to be turned down before the board will stay on a network.
